Accessibility Services

Review the accessibility services available for students at Ontario Institute of Health and Innovation.

Ontario Institute of Health and Innovation is committed to ensuring an accessible, inclusive environment for all students to learn and participate in the classroom with equal opportunity. We work to remove barriers for students with disabilities and support students with individualized plans and academic accommodations to meet their unique needs.

What is Accessibility?

Accessibility is the commitment to and practice of making education and other spaces as barrier-free as possible for everyone, creating an inclusive environment where everyone can succeed and participate with equal opportunity.

Who are Accessibility Services for?

Accessibility services can help students with many different types of disabilities, ranging from physical to cognitive conditions that reduce a person’s ability to fully participate in education and other activities.

Disabilities can be:

  • Visible (e.g., using a wheelchair, hearing aid, prosthetics)
  • Invisible (e.g., ADHD, learning disabilities, diagnosed depression)
  • Permanent – a lifelong condition (e.g., loss of a limb, hearing or sight)
  • Temporary – time-limited (e.g., broken leg or arm)

What is an Academic Accommodation?

An academic accommodation is an arrangement made for students with a disability to be able to fully engage in their education experience.

Some examples of academic accommodations include assistive technology, extra time for assignments/exams, excused time off, recorded lectures, dedicated quiet spaces to complete assignments/exams and more. These arrangements allow students to fulfill their program and course requirements.

Accessibility services are free and confidential.

If you have a disability and would like to request academic accommodations, please get in touch with accessibility services at accessibility@oihi.ca.

An accessibility counsellor will help determine how we can best serve your needs and plan to arrange appropriate accommodations.
