Making Your College Education More Affordable: Financial Aid Options at OIHI

At Ontario Institute of Health and Innovation (OIHI), we believe everyone should have the opportunity to pursue a rewarding career without financial barriers standing in the way. That’s why we offer a range of financial aid options to help you start strong and stay focused on your future.

Here are some of the ways you can finance your education at OIHI:

1. Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP)

If you are an Ontario resident and a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or protected person, you may be eligible for OSAP. This government-funded program offers a mix of grants and loans to help cover tuition, books, and living expenses, if eligible, while you study. Many students at OIHI use OSAP to support their education, and our financial aid advisors are available to guide you through the application process.

2. Better Jobs Ontario

Better Jobs Ontario (formerly Second Career) is a provincially-funded initiative that helps laid-off, unemployed, or underemployed workers retrain for new careers. Eligible applicants can receive up to CAD $28,000 in funding to help cover tuition, books, transportation, and living costs. If you’re looking to transition into a healthcare role, this program could be a strong fit for your goals.

3. Lifelong Learning Plan (LLP)

The LLP allows you or your spouse (or common-law partner) to withdraw funds from your registered retirement savings plan (RRSP) to finance full-time education or training, without paying tax on the withdrawal. It’s a useful option for mature students or those returning to school after time in the workforce.

4. Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP)

If you are the beneficiary of a family member’s RESP, those funds can be used to support your education at OIHI. RESP savings can be applied to tuition, textbooks, and other academic costs, making it an excellent resource for students in Canada. Contact the financial institution managing the RESP to learn more.

5. Student Lines of Credit

Many banks and credit unions offer student lines of credit tailored to the needs of post-secondary learners. These lines of credit typically offer lower interest rates and flexible repayment options. Eligibility depends on your financial history and credit profile, and in some cases, a co-signer may be required.

6. Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) Funding

If you’re receiving WSIB benefits or are the surviving spouse of someone who was, you may qualify for education funding. WSIB can help cover the costs of retraining for a new career if you’re unable to return to your previous occupation.

7. First Nations Funding

First Nations students can access a variety of funding options and support services aimed at increasing access to post-secondary education. If you identify as First Nations, we encourage you to contact your local band office or Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) regional office to learn more about your funding eligibility.

8. Sherryl Kintu Scholarship

One of the most meaningful financial aid options at OIHI is the Sherryl Kintu Scholarship. This Scholarship was created in memory of Sherryl Kintu, whose journey from executive assistant to director at Global University Systems (GUS) inspired those around her. Known for her creativity, ambition, and integrity, Sherryl’s legacy lives on through this award.

This scholarship offers 100% tuition coverage (including books and materials) to two selected applicants annually. For more information about the scholarship and how to apply, please visit our Scholarships and Bursaries web page.

If you’re preparing for a career as a personal support worker (PSW) or early childhood assistant (ECA), these options can help you take that step with confidence, knowing that you can fully commit yourself to your studies and prioritize learning the skills to help you achieve your career aspirations.
